About

The practice

There is a meditative quiet in the work of ceramicist Gui Moufarrige a calm that comes from years of building a relationship with clay. A Brazilian-born artist based in Austin, Gui strives to learn the art of nerikomi to create tableware that feels timeless and unique.

For Gui, working with clay is an act of attunement, and nerikomi is more than a technique. The repetitive motions, shifts between stages, and the slow, intimate unfolding of form create a grounding rhythm. Each piece begins with marbles of stained clay and carefully composed palettes where every hue is chosen with intention. It is a moment of curiosity and mystery where color becomes meaning and pattern becomes story. This is where Gui feels at home, creating unique pieces, trusting that each color palette will speak for itself.

About Gui

Austin-based ceramicist Gui Moufarrige creates hand-built Nerikomi dinnerware and centerpieces rooted in stained clay, culture, and everyday ritual. Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Gui first learned ceramics at 14 and returned to clay years later as a way to slow down, reconnect with himself, and build a more intentional creative practice.

Gui believes every culture carries a relationship with clay. Humans live with clay every day, often without thinking about it. It appears in the homes we enter, the tables we gather around, the vessels we hold, and the materials that shape our shared spaces. His work invites people to notice clay again, not only as a material, but as part of how culture shapes daily life.

Through Nerikomi, Gui explores stained clay as color, pattern, and memory. Color is not applied to the surface. It is built into the clay body itself. Each piece begins through staining, wedging, resting, rolling, compressing, cutting, shaping, firing, sanding, and glazing. The result is functional work with visual depth, made to be touched, used, and lived with.

Gui’s customers are drawn to his pieces because they see beyond a plate. They notice shapes that bring back memories. They connect with movement, color, and pattern. They look for something different from a traditional white plate. Something with feeling, presence, and individuality.

For Gui, a plate is more than a surface for food. It is an appetizer for feeling before the meal is served. His dinnerware invites curiosity, warmth, and conversation at the table. Each piece is unique, like each person who chooses it.

Gui is especially drawn to dinner sets and centerpieces because they bring people together. They hold meals, conversations, celebrations, and quiet rituals. His work asks a simple question: how can handmade art brighten the everyday?

Through stained clay, Gui creates pieces for collectors, hosts, and people who want their daily rituals to feel more personal, more alive, and more connected.
